Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children and adolescents and can continue into adulthood. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that approximately 5% of school-age children have ADHD. Children with ADHD generally have problems paying attention or concentrating. Many children (especially younger ones) may act without thinking or have trouble sitting still or focusing. Children with ADHD display symptoms over a long period of time and occur in a variety of settings. Without diagnosis and proper treatment, ADHD can impair a child’s ability to function socially, academically and at home.
Symptoms of ADHD in children and adolescents are generally grouped into three categories:

- Predominately Inattentive Type
- Hyperactive/Impulsive Type
- Combined Type (Inattentive and Hyperactive/Impulsive)
